The Houston Astros deal Mark Melancon to the Red Sox
The Astros have dealt 26-year old righty closer Mark Melancon to the Boston Red Sox for 27-year old switch-hitting shortstop Jed Lowrie and 25-year old righty starting pitcher Kyle Weiland. Melancon pitched in 71 games (0 starts) for the Astros last year and he was 8-4 with 20 saves, a 2.78 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP. He pitched in 91 games (0 starts) in his two years with the Astros and he was 8-4 with 20 saves, a 2.78 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP. Jed Lowrie will take over as the Astros’ starting shortstop in 2012. He played in 88 games for the Red Sox last year and he was 78 for 309 (.252 avg, .685 OPS) with 40 runs scored, 6 homers, 36 RBIs and 1 stolen base. He has now played in 256 games in his first four years in the majors and he is 204 of 808 (.252 avg, .732 OPS) with 110 runs scored, 19 homers, 117 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Kyle Weiland pitched in 7 games (5 starts) for the Red Sox last year in heavy pressure situations late in the season and he was 0-3 with a 7.66 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP. He looked very nervous in the pressure cooker of a playoff race. He also pitched in 24 games (all starts) in AAA-ball for the Red Sox last year and he was 8-10 with a 3.58 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. Weiland will get a shot to win a job in the Astros’ starting rotation next spring. I like this deal for the Astros.
