The Astros have placed 29-year old righty swinging 2B/OF Jason Bourgeios on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained right quadriceps muscle. Bourgeios has played in 45 games for the Astros so far this year and he is 36 for 102 (.353 avg, .793 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 0 homers, 9 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. This is a bad break for Bourgeios who was likely to get a big shot at expanded P.T. The Astros have called up 27-year old lefty swinging outfielder Brian Bogusevic to replace Bourgeios on the active roster. Bogusevic played in 25 games earlier this year for the Astros and he was 6 for 27 (.222 avg, .545 OPS) with 3 runs scored and 1 RBI.

The Astros have claimed 25-year old lefty swinging outfielder Luis Durango off waivers from the Padres. Durango has played in 61 games in AAA-ball this year and he is 43 for 177 (.243 avg, .622 OPS) with 36 runs scored, 0 homers, 15 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. He has played in 37 games in parts of two years in the majors and he is 18 for 59 (.305 avg, .674 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 0 homers, 4 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. Maybe a change of scenery will recharge the batteries for Durango. If he gets off to a good start in the minors for the Astros, don’t be surprised to see him called up quickly.

26-year old lefty reliever Wesley Wright is trying to get back to Houston. He has pitched in 25 games (2 starts) in AAA-ball so far this year and he is 2-0 with a 2.87 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. He has only given up 32 hits in 37 2/3 innings this year while whiffing 34 batters, but, he has also walked 16 batters and that’s too many. If he can tighten up his control a bit while still pitching like he is right now, the Astros could give him another chance to pitch for them. Wright has pitched in 134 games (3 starts) in three years with the Astros prior to 2011 and he is 8-9 with 1 save, a 5.33 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP.

27-year old righty swinging infielder Matt Downs is hitting the heck out of the ball for the Astros. In 18 games in June, Downs is 8 for 24 (.333 avg, 1.292 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 3 homers and 8 RBIs. Downs has now played in 52 games for the Astros so far this year and he is 23 for 82 (.280 avg, .986 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 6 homers and 21 RBIs. Chris Johnson better start looking over his shoulder at 3B, because the Astros are having a hard time scoring runs right now and he has not been hitting well. Downs might start stealing some of Johnson’s ABs if he doesn’t pick up the pace right now.

Righty swinging 3B Enos Cabell was with the Astros when they lacked power but had a lot of jackrabbits on the bases. Cabell fit right in with the Astros’ playing style. His best season with the Astros was back in 1978 when he finished 22nd in the voting for the MVP Award. Cabell played in all 162 games for the Astros last year and he was 195 for 660 (.295 avg, .720 OPS) with 92 runs scored, 7 homers, 71 RBIs and 33 stolen bases. Cabell played 8 years for the Astros appearing in 1,067 games in which he was 1,124 for 4,005 (.281 avg, .693 OPS) with 522 runs scored, 45 homers, 405 RBIs and 191 stolen bases. Cabell is #10 in Astros’ history in hits with 1,124. He is also 8th in triples (45) and he is tied for 7th with Bill Doran in steals in Astros’ history with 191 of them.
